Understanding Wish in English Grammar
The verb “wish” is used to express a desire for something to be different or to express regret. Depending on the situation, we use different verb forms after “wish”:
1. Wish + Past Simple
- Use: To express a wish about a present situation that is different from reality.
- Form: wish + subject + Past Simple
Example:
- “I wish I had a car.” (But I don’t have a car now.)
- “She wishes she were here.” (But she is not here.)
⚠️ Note: We use “were” instead of “was” for all subjects (I, he, she, it) in this structure.
2. Wish + Could
- Use: To express a wish for something that is currently impossible or for an ability we do not have.
- Form: wish + subject + could + base form of the verb
Example:
- “I wish I could play the guitar.” (But I cannot play.)
- “They wish they could travel more often.” (But they cannot.)
3. Wish + Past Perfect
- Use: To express regret about something that happened (or didn’t happen) in the past.
- Form: wish + subject + Past Perfect (had + past participle)
Example:
- “I wish I had studied harder.” (But I didn’t study enough.)
- “She wishes she hadn’t eaten so much.” (But she ate a lot.)
4. Wish + Would (Expressing Frustration or Annoyance)
- Use: To express frustration or annoyance with something we cannot control.
- Form: wish + subject + would + base form of the verb
Example:
- “I wish you would stop shouting.” (But you are shouting.)
- “He wishes it would stop raining.” (But it keeps raining.)
Remember:
- Use “were” for all subjects in Wish + Past Simple (not “was”).
- Use “had + past participle” for regrets about the past.
- Use “could” for abilities or possibilities.
- Use “would” for expressing frustration.
