Theory (in English)
Present Perfect Simple
We use the Present Perfect Simple for:
-
actions that happened in the past but affect the present
-
life experiences (without saying when)
-
actions that started in the past and still continue (often with for / since)
-
recent events and first-time experiences
Examples:
-
I have lost my keys.
-
Have you ever been to Paris?
-
She has lived here for ten years.
-
This is the first time I have tried sushi.
Present Perfect Continuous
We use the Present Perfect Continuous for:
-
actions that started in the past and are still continuing
-
actions that have just stopped and we can see the result
-
to emphasize the duration of an action
Examples:
-
I have been studying all afternoon.
-
He has been waiting for an hour.
-
She is tired because she has been working all day.
⚠️ Stative verbs are NOT usually used in the continuous form.
-
I have known him for years. (NOT: have been knowing)
Present Perfect Simple vs Continuous
-
Simple → focus on result / fact
-
Continuous → focus on duration / activity
Example:
-
I have written three emails. (result)
-
I have been writing emails all morning. (duration)
